Doch Lesen ist für Kinder und Jugendliche von immenser Wichtigkeit. Es fördert die Phantasie und Kreativität, vermittelt soziale Verhaltensweisen, Wertevorstellungen sowie sprachliche Kompetenzen und ist wichtig für eine gesunde Entwicklung.

Nicht zuletzt ermöglicht Lesekompetenz den Kindern den Zugang zu anderen Medien, die in der heutigen Wissensgesellschaft wichtig sind. Ob und wie Kinder Lesemotivation entwickeln, hängt in erster Linie von der Auswahl des literarischen Inhalts sowie dem Umgang mit demselben ab.

Den Bilderbüchern kann hierbei eine besondere Bedeutung zukommen, denn sie sind für Kinder häufig der erste Berührungspunkt mit Literatur. Bilderbücher führen in die Welt der Lektüre ein und ermöglichen eine erste in depth Beziehung zwischen Kindern und Literatur. Deshalb sind Bilderbücher gerade auch für die Grundschule und den Anfangsunterricht sehr intestine geeignet, da sie – im Idealfall – eine bekannte shape von Literatur aus dem Kindergarten darstellen. Trotz all dieser Vorzüge ist das Bilderbuch in der Grundschule immer noch unterrepräsentiert.
